My teaching phiLosophy
As a child, I loved to create! I spent hours coloring, painting, cutting, & pasting. In elementary school, I entered coloring and poster contests and I remember looking forward to art class every week. In middle school and high school, I enrolled in every art class available. During high school, it became clear to me that I wanted to pursue a career in art. While attending Kansas State University, I decided that earning a degree in art education would be the perfect career from me because it allowed me to interact with children and teach students about my favorite topic...art! Although I love all forms of art, my specialty is in painting, drawing, and photography. Within my own art, I like to explore nature and the human form. Furthermore, much of my artwork is inspired by my love for travel and exploration! I have had the honor of traveling to many countries including Mexico, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, St. Vincent, Greece, Spain, Italy, France, Ireland, and England.
At Riverview, we will be exploring art in a variety of fun and exciting ways! Students will use the elements and principles of art as building blocks to understand how to create and analyze art. I will incorporate other subject matters including language arts, math, science, technology, and social studies in studio art lessons. My goal is to expose students to a variety of different types of art media, as well as techniques. Several types of media we will explore including: drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, collage, and printmaking. Additionally, I incorporate the study of famous artists from Pre-historic to present! Furthermore, I include lessons that examine other cultures and the ways that they create art. I believe that as our would becomes increasingly diverse, it is important for students to explore, respect, and appreciate other cultures. Additionally, in today's world, students view images constantly via the internet and television. Because images are so prevalent in today's society, students need to be able to analyze and respond to these images. Finally, I encourage students to use their creativity, imagination and problem solving skills, while challenging students to think critically about how art is relevant, important, and meaningful to their lives.
