Japanese sumi-e inspired lanterns
Third grade students learned about the art of Sumi-e, which is a form of painting in Japan. Sumi-e means ink picture and stems from the art of calligraphy. To create a sumi-e painting for materials are needed: ink, watercolor brushes, paper, and water. These paintings are monochromatic meaning, done in one color. We folded our painting to create a lantern.
